Custom-made medical care and Biotechnology Bank

The project for realization of custom-made medical care started in 2003 as a leading project of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. With the assistance of 300,000 patients and to develop new medical care, Tokushukai is establishing a bank of DNA and serum, Through the analysis of DNA and serum, we will provide new medical care and find the cause of diseases and side effects through the function of the bank.

Participants in the formal Project for Comprehensive Medical Care for Each Person using Genetic Information consist of eight medical organizations: The Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo is the leader; Tokushukai; Iwate Medical University; Osaka Medical Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases; Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research; Juntendo University; Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Medical Center; Nippon Medical School; and Nihon University. In the beginning, we will start custom-made medical care for 37 medical conditions, such as angina pectoris, cardiac infarction, cerebrovascular disorders, asthma, lung cancer, and esophageal cancer.

Traditionally, doctors believed that each patient should be treated according to her predisposition. However, we will find the most appropriate treatment by studying the genes. Custom-made medical care will dramatically change traditional medical treatment. To realize custom-made medical care, Tokushukai has been working on the project ahead of the others. Our medical coordinators have already gone into action to collect blood samples from participating patients at Tokushukai medical hospitals to establish the Biotechnology Bank.
